Lawyer Morara Kebaso has pledged to refund Kenyans who contributed to his political campaign fundraiser, saying he wants to clear any doubts about his intentions and protect his reputation after stepping away from active politics.
In a heartfelt post on his social media platforms on Friday, July 25, Kebaso said the refunds would go to anyone who felt their donation was misinterpreted as a political endorsement or was made under false expectations.
“If you need a refund for any contribution you made when I was raising campaign funds, kindly reply with your M-Pesa message or reference code,” he wrote. “I’d like to refund any Kenyan who thought their support was meant to push me into leadership.”Kebaso clarified that while he appreciated the support, he never wanted the contributions to be seen as a stepping stone to political power.
“I cannot allow anyone to call me a conman or a beggar. That label has weighed heavily on me since I quit politics,” he said, adding that returning the money is his way of restoring peace of mind. “If refunding makes me look childish, then so be it; call me Morara the baby boy. I just want to get this burden off my chest.”Last year, on September 4, 2024, Kebaso launched a public appeal to raise Ksh 1.2 million to buy a public address system and other campaign tools. His message quickly went viral, and within a short time, his mobile money account maxed out at Ksh 500,000, the daily transaction limit.
“Thank you for your contributions,” he told his followers at the time. “The M-Pesa account is full. Kindly stop sending until tomorrow.”He later announced that he had successfully purchased a “super clear presidential address system” and intended to use it for national outreach.
But now, with political ambitions shelved, Kebaso wants to ensure no one feels misled.
“I’ve been traumatised by accusations of being a fraud. I’m not ready to carry that into my future,” he said. “This is about walking away from the noise with my head held high.”
