Mombasa Promises Promotions and Permanent Jobs for Doctors After KMPDU Talks

Mombasa County has agreed to promote 147 doctors and make 64 of them permanent on pensionable terms following negotiations with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

This was agreed on Tuesday, March 3, following threats of a strike by doctors on February 24 over promotions, unpaid statutory deductions, and job security for contract doctors. Governor Abdulswamad Nassir led negotiations, breaking the deadlock and starting promotions for various staff categories.

Highlights of the Agreement:

  • 15 doctors serving in Job Group M have received notification of promotions to Job Group N. More promotions are set for other categories of staff.
  • Starting April 1, 33 doctors serving in higher job grades than M will receive promotions, followed by 39 more in July.
  • Promotions for 17 doctors serving in Job Group Q and moving to Job Group R, and for four serving in Job Group R and moving to Job Group S, are set for later.

The county government agreed to make 64 contract doctors permanent and pensionable starting June 1, 2026.

In addition, all pending statutory deductions will be cleared by September 2026, addressing one of the most anger-inducing issues among the medic fraternity.

The KMPDU Secretary General, Davji Atellah, said that the agreement includes provisions that will shield medical services from political interference. “The two parties agree that medical personnel and operations shall remain free from political interference,” Atellah said.
