Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA over a social media tribute to Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid, which omitted any mention of the circumstances of his death.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) reported on Thursday that the 41-year-old former striker was killed in an Israeli airstrike while waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza on Wednesday.
Obeid, who the PFA described as the “Pelé of Palestinian football,” scored over 100 goals in his career, including two in 24 international appearances.
On Friday, UEFA posted on X: “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pelé’. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.”
In response on Saturday, Egyptian international Salah wrote: “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”
Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and led to the capture of 251 hostages.
Suleiman al-Obeid was killed in Gaza.
Since then, more than 61,300 people have been reported killed in Gaza due to Israeli military actions.
Salah has previously used his platform to call for humanitarian access to Gaza and urged world leaders to act to stop the killing of civilians.
