Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has officially requested his removal from all Nairobi City Assembly committees, citing Speaker Ken Ng’ondi’s failure to comply with court orders.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 12, Alai voiced his concerns over what he described as a “blatant disregard for the law,” arguing that such actions undermine the integrity of the assembly and diminish public trust.
Alai’s challenges began after he publicly addressed corruption issues during a session of the Senate Public Accounts Committee.
Following his controversial ousting from the Public Accounts Committee, he announced his resignation from other committees, including the Energy and ICT Committee and the Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Committee.
He emphasized that he would only consider rejoining these committees once the legal processes are properly observed.
In April, Alai, along with Ngei MCA Redson Otieno Onyango, took legal action against Speaker Ng’ondi, challenging his decision to restructure the House committees.
They contended that their expulsion was not only unjust but also a calculated move by political adversaries seeking to settle personal grievances.
The Nairobi County Assembly has faced increased scrutiny in recent months due to allegations of financial mismanagement.
One major controversy involved the purchase of a gold-plated mace valued at Ksh 33 million, which sparked public outrage regarding the assembly’s financial priorities.
In light of ongoing concerns, the Auditor General has been called upon to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the assembly’s financial records dating back to 2020, particularly focusing on the alleged misappropriation of Ksh 1.3 billion allocated to the assembly.
