Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has expressed his readiness to support Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the opposition’s joint presidential flagbearer in the 2027 General Election, if consensus within the coalition favors him.
Speaking during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at Uhuru Park on Friday, Matiang’i urged opposition leaders to put the country’s interests above personal ambitions and embrace unity as they prepare to face President William Ruto’s ruling coalition.
“We must put ambition and everything else before the interest of this country,” Matiang’i told delegates. “When the united opposition decides that you (Kalonzo) will be the candidate, I will support you, and we will support you.”
He emphasized that selecting a joint opposition candidate should be an inclusive and consultative process, rooted in dialogue and shared vision.
“When the time comes to sit together and identify one candidate, we should all rally behind that individual,” he said.
Matiang’i described coalition-building as a journey of compromise and alignment, noting that true unity is built through cooperation despite differences.
His remarks come amid growing efforts among opposition figures to consolidate forces ahead of 2027.
The NDC was attended by several high-profile leaders, including DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, NARC Kenya’s Martha Karua, and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua — signaling renewed momentum towards forming a formidable opposition alliance to challenge President Ruto’s administration.
