A woman who was caught attempting to smuggle 50 rolls of bhang into the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi denies the claim, asserting that she picked up the bag by mistake.
On Wednesday, October 8, the woman was arrested when security personnel at the court’s main gate conducted a screening and found her carrying a black paper bag that the charge sheet stated held the rolls of bhang.
She was held at the location and later passed on to anti-narcotics officers for further questioning.
On Thursday, when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina the suspect was able to plead to the court for the first time and claim that she had not committed trafficking on the grounds that when leaving the court, she had anticipated the bag in her possession contained cash, stating, “I picked those items when I was leaving the court gates not knowing they were bhang. I would never had picked them up had I known.”
The woman had also pleaded for mercy and explained that she had a special needs child that has been in the dark since her arrest.
Chief Magistrate Onyina ordered that the case be moved to the JKIA Law Courts, which has jurisdiction over trafficking-related cases.
He also ordered that she be remanded pending the completion of her case.
