A promising long-distance runner died after collapsing during a routine morning training session in Kapsabet.
Weldon Kerich Cheruiyot, 30, a marathon athlete and member of the Jubilee Athletics Club in Kapsabet, was training with fellow runners when he suddenly collapsed on a street near the Kapsabet High Courts.
Witnesses said he appeared to struggle with breathing moments before falling.
Training partners and passersby rushed to his aid and quickly transported him to the county referral hospital. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
County government officials said plans were underway to facilitate the transfer of Cheruiyot’s body from Kapsabet to Longisa Mortuary, close to his home, as the family begins funeral preparations.
