Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja has sounded out a warning that a massive humanitarian crisis is spiraling out of control in Kihoto estate, Naivasha.

The flooding from Lake Naivasha has displaced a minimum of 5,000 families. After seeing the disaster first-hand, the Senator mentioned that the condition was a ‘time bomb’ and on the danger of an outbreak of diseases that they were facing, for instance, with flooded toilets, a rise in mosquitoes, and hunger.

“It is a health catastrophe that is ticking away. We could be facing a major outbreak of diseases if timely intervention is not provided,” Senator Karanja warned.

The locals alleged that both the national government and the county have been unmindful, as they have hardly done anything to protect them from the rising water levels. Most of the displaced families have resorted to constructing temporary huts for shelter and are having a hard time getting food and other basic necessities.

The floods have been continually evicting more families from their houses, thereby deepening the crisis and increasing fears about the safety of the settlements around the lake in the long run.
