Manchester United mounted a dramatic late comeback and were ultimately saved by VAR in a thrilling draw at Everton, a match that looked poised to send them deeper into crisis at Goodison Park.

Everton, under the leadership of returning manager David Moyes—formerly of United—seized control in the first half, dominating play and taking a well-deserved two-goal lead.

The Toffees capitalized on United’s defensive shortcomings, with Beto scoring his fifth goal under Moyes in the 19th minute after a chaotic goalmouth scramble.

Abdoulaye Doucoure then doubled Everton’s advantage with a header.

United’s defense was caught off guard for the second goal when Harry Maguire failed to respond quickly after goalkeeper Andre Onana saved Jack Harrison’s shot, allowing Doucoure to head in with ease.

Everton continued to dominate until Bruno Fernandes gave United a glimmer of hope, steering home a free-kick with 18 minutes remaining.

Just eight minutes later, Manuel Ugarte powered in a shot to draw United level.

The drama didn’t end there, as Everton were left frustrated after referee Andrew Madley initially awarded a penalty when Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Maguire, with Matthijs de Ligt also tugging on Young.

However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

United’s comeback was a surprising turn of events, given Everton’s early dominance. The draw spared manager Ruben Amorim from the humiliation of a potential ninth league defeat in 13 matches.

Everton, meanwhile, will be deeply disappointed not to secure the win after controlling much of the match.
