The government has intensified efforts to modernize Wajir High School through a wide-ranging infrastructure upgrade aimed at supporting the implementation of the Competency-Based Education curriculum and improving student welfare.
Interior Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the ongoing transformation of the institution also includes rehabilitation of the school’s original structures built in 1965.
According to the PS, the modernization programme includes construction of a four-kilometre perimeter wall, development of internal roads by the Kenya National Highways Authority, expansion of dormitory facilities, installation of solar power and drilling of a borehole to improve water access at the school.
“The upgrade covers the construction of a 4km² perimeter wall around the institution, internal roads undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), dormitory facilities, a borehole, solar power installation and two additional classrooms,’he said in a statement.
The project further includes the construction of additional classrooms and a modern ICT hub and library being developed through a partnership between Safaricom Foundation and the National Government.
The ICT facility, which is expected to be commissioned in June, will accommodate up to 1,000 students and will feature a boardroom, luggage area and modern shelving systems.
Further developments at the institution include the construction of a twin Chemistry and Biology laboratory, a social hall financed through balances from the digital lab project, and renovation of existing facilities such as the main hall and podium.
The school is also rolling out an environmentally friendly steam jiko system as part of efforts to improve efficiency and sustainability within the institution.
To strengthen student welfare, the government and stakeholders have ensured full capitation and examination fee coverage for all learners, while two school buses are also expected to be launched in June through support from the local and diaspora community under the leadership of the Wajir High School Alumni Association.
Meanwhile, the County Government of Wajir, led by Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, has committed to drilling an additional borehole to further improve water supply at the institution.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating implementation and oversight of the modernization programme to ensure smooth delivery of the projects.
