The Government will allocate an additional Sh7.8 billion to fund the treatment of chronic diseases and the provision of critical care services under the Taifa Care programme, as announced by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
In the supplementary budget to be presented in the National Assembly this week, Sh3 billion will be added to the fund for chronic and critical illnesses, with another Sh3 billion directed to primary healthcare.
Additionally, Sh1.8 billion will be allocated to strengthen maternal healthcare services.
Starting March 1, a new, data-driven, objective, and consistent Means Testing Tool will be introduced to offer a precise, scientific assessment of all citizens registered with the Social Health Authority.
This updated tool, designed based on feedback from citizens and stakeholders, will ensure predictable premium payments for all registered citizens, eliminating the possibility of manipulation.
“The successful implementation of the Universal Healthcare Coverage programme is a key priority for the Kenya Kwanza Administration as part of its economic transformation agenda. To date, 19.5 million Kenyans have been registered, and efforts are ongoing to ensure every citizen has access to medical coverage. We encourage all registered citizens to make their monthly contributions to ensure the sustainability of Taifa Care,” said Kindiki.

Following the withdrawal of funding for key healthcare programmes by the US Government, Kenya has made contingency financing arrangements to ensure uninterrupted delivery of services to the people.
Kindiki made these remarks after the conclusion of the National and County Governments Health Summit, where the implementation of Taifa Care was reviewed and consensus was reached on administrative and policy actions to promote efficient and sustainable Universal Health Coverage.
The event was attended by Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mulongo, Principal Secretaries, the Council of Governors led by Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, Moses Kuria (Senior Advisor, President’s Council of Economic Advisors), senior National and County Government officials, and other health sector stakeholders.
