Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher set to take charge on an interim basis for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley.

The decision follows a period of growing tension between Amorim and the club’s hierarchy.

On Friday, the Portuguese coach hinted at a strained relationship with senior officials, suggesting he would not receive full backing in the transfer market.

After Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds, Amorim appeared to further criticise the club’s leadership, saying he wanted to operate as a manager rather than just a coach and indicating he was prepared to leave when his contract expired in 18 months.

Less than a day later, United confirmed that Amorim had “departed his role as head coach of Manchester United” after 14 months in charge.

“With Manchester United currently sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that now is the right time to make a change,” the club said in a statement.

“This will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”

Darren Fletcher set to take charge on an interim basis.

Amorim, 40, was appointed in November 2024 and recorded 25 wins from 63 matches during his time at Old Trafford.

His 14-month spell is the shortest tenure of a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed just eight months into his reign in 2014.
