The LSK has expressed serious concerns over the rise in electoral violence, following chaotic by-elections held on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo has sounded the alarm over the conduct of IEBC in a statement issued on Friday, warning the country risks undoing years of democratic progress if the trend continues.

“Kenya has built a reputation for vibrant and mature elections, but what we saw yesterday is a stark reminder that our democracy remains fragile,” Odhiambo said. “We cannot allow elections to descend into fear, chaos, and bloodshed.”

Electoral Violence Threatens Democratic Gains

Conducted across the country in 22 constituencies, the by-elections were reportedly tainted by incidents of violence and disorder that left many voters fearful and frustrated. The LSK noted that these disruptions go beyond isolated cases, reflecting deeper gaps in electoral planning and security coordination.

“While Kenyans are politically passionate, passion must not turn into peril,” Odhiambo added. “Elections are meant to reflect the people’s voice, not to spark unrest or threaten lives.”

The society also criticized the IEBC for not adhering to all the constitutional requirements while organizing the polls and urged the commission to strengthen preparations going forward to the 2027 general elections.

Urgent Call for Accountability and Preventive Measures

The LSK has urged security agencies and the IEBC to probe all incidents of electoral violence under Section 11 of the Elections Offenses Act, which prohibits the use of force during elections. The society further called upon the ODPP to ensure that prompt action is taken on those found guilty.

“The message should be clear: in a democratic society, there can be no room for violence,” Odhiambo underscored. “Political leaders, civil society and security agencies must therefore combine efforts to ensure such events are not witnessed again in 2027.” As Kenya heads to the next general elections, such a warning from LSK is timely because it reminds citizens that democracy concerns all. The peace and respect for electoral processes are not options for citizens, political leaders, and law enforcers.
