Laikipia University has announced an immediate and indefinite closure following escalating student unrest and property damage along the Laikipia–Nyahururu Highway.
The decision was confirmed in a notice from the Office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs) after the University’s 196th Special Senate Meeting on March 23, 2026. Authorities cited student protests, engagement with police, and destruction of property as reasons for the shutdown.
All students have been instructed to vacate the campus immediately, with security personnel working alongside government agencies to oversee the evacuation. The university warned that students who fail to comply may face disciplinary action under institutional regulations. Officials stated that updates regarding the resumption of academic activities will be communicated once the situation stabilizes.
The closure follows the tragic death of a first-year Media and Communication student, Hillary Vulimu, who died during a hiking excursion at Subukia Viewpoint Waterfalls. Students reported that the university ambulance was unavailable, allegedly because it was a public holiday. His peers were forced to transport him on a motorbike to nearby hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.
