The Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives of the National Assembly held a public participation forum on the Legal Metrology Bill No.43 of 2026 and the Trade Descriptions (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The forum, chaired by Hon. Marianne Kitany, Member of Parliament (MP) for Aldai Constituency and Deputy Chairperson of the Committee, brought together stakeholders from the trade sector representatives of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), government officials and other interested parties.
The forum provided a platform for submissions, recommendations and debate before the Bills proceed to the next stages of parliamentary consideration.
The Legal Metrology Bill, 2026, seeks to establish a modern legal and administrative framework for the application of legal metrology standards in trade, health, safety, law enforcement, environmental protection and the sale of goods.
The Bill introduces stricter controls over the manufacture, sales and use of weighing and measuring equipment, that will ensure accuracy and reliability.
If Bill is passed, the proposed law will promote accuracy and fairness in commercial transactions while protecting consumers and businesses from inaccurate measurements.
The Trade Descriptions (Amendment) Bill, 2026, will focus on strengthening consumers protection in the age of digital commerce, extending the digital economy amendments will extend trade description regulations to cover digital advertisements, online platforms and e-commerce services.
The Bill also aims to safeguard consumers from false, deceptive or exaggerated trade descriptions particularly in digital marketplace.
Hon. Kitany reiterated that public participation is the cornerstone of Kenya’s legislative process, ensuring opportunities for submissions on the two Bills before proceeding to the next stages of parliamentary consideration.
