Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has broken its silence over the shocking killing of a patient inside its facility, revealing that the suspect in custody was a former long-term patient who had been living within the hospital premises despite being discharged months earlier.

In a detailed statement signed by Dr. William Sigilai on behalf of CEO Dr. Evanson Kamuri, the hospital confirmed that the deceased was a male patient admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025. He was discovered dead on July 17, shortly after the lunchtime visiting hours, with medical staff reporting a “deep cut to his neck.”

KNH says emergency protocols were immediately activated, and the matter was escalated to law enforcement agencies. Investigations led to the arrest of the prime suspect on Thursday.

“The suspect is a homeless person with no known relatives or confirmed identity. Despite our efforts to trace his background using fingerprint identification and social media appeals, nothing substantial came up,” the statement reads.

According to the hospital, the suspect had previously been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in November 2022 and was later discharged several times. In June 2024, KNH found him a home, but after falling ill again in December 2024, he was re-admitted and discharged in January 2025. Unfortunately, the same home declined to receive him back.

As a result, the hospital said it had “no choice but to continue hosting him temporarily” as efforts to find alternative accommodation continued.

Disturbingly, KNH disclosed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had previously flagged the suspect as a person of interest in connection with an earlier murder that occurred within the hospital in February 2025.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death of the recent victim, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed.

“We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. The hospital is cooperating fully with the police and will provide updates as investigations continue,” the statement concluded.
