Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said the government’s investment in housing and market infrastructure is beginning to ease everyday pressures for families and small traders in Machakos Town.

During a visit to the county on Friday, November 14, Kindiki said residents are already feeling the benefits of the first phase of the Affordable Housing Programme, where 220 new homes have now been handed over.

The units — part of a KSh541 million investment — will accommodate 770 residents, many of whom previously relied on overcrowded or unstable housing.

“This is not just a construction project. It is about dignity for families who have waited for years for decent housing,” Kindiki said at the event, where he accompanied President William Ruto for the official handover.

He added that the second phase of the programme, currently being rolled out, will add 570 more units at a cost of KSh1.6 billion, creating space for almost 2,000 residents and providing hundreds of youth with short-term construction jobs.

Away from housing, Kindiki also inspected the newly built Mutituni ESP Market, which he said will give traders a safer, more organised space to operate and help stabilise incomes for small businesses that form the backbone of the town’s economy.

He noted that the developments are part of a wider government plan to grow urban centres outside Nairobi by improving services, boosting local trade and creating an environment where young people can find work.

“These projects show what consistent investment and good planning can achieve. Machakos is changing, and the people are front and centre of that transformation,” Kindiki said.
