A fire broke out at Christ the King Kirwara Boys High School in Gatanga, Murang’a County, on Wednesday afternoon as students returned for the new term.
The blaze engulfed a school bus and several buildings within the compound, sending thick smoke into the air as efforts to contain the fire continued.
Students were evacuated from the affected areas as emergency responders moved in to fight the fire.
A Murang’a County fire engine was deployed to the school to help contain the blaze.
Images and videos from the scene showed flames consuming parts of the school compound, with the bus also seen on fire.
The exact number of buildings affected and the value of property destroyed had not been established by the time of publication.
It was also not immediately clear what caused the fire or whether the bus was the source of the blaze.
No casualties had been reported at the time of the latest reports.
The incident comes amid renewed concern over fires in Kenyan schools, with several institutions reporting fire incidents in recent months.
On Tuesday, a dormitory fire was reported at St Michael Secondary School Kyenire in Mbeere North, Embu County. A fire also destroyed property at Jomo Kenyatta Boys’ High School in Nakuru County last month.
Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the Kirwara fire and assess the extent of the damage.
