Nairobi is undergoing a major urban renewal programme aimed at transforming the capital into a modern, safe and functional city that meets the needs of residents, businesses and investors.
The Nairobi County Urban Renewal and Regeneration Programme, implemented jointly by the National and County Governments, is upgrading infrastructure and public spaces across the city.
Speaking about the programme, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the project includes improvements to roads and pavements, upgraded walkways, installation of dustbins and decorative walls, as well as the Smart Street Lighting Project, which is adding more than 40,000 automated LED fixtures capable of reporting faults in real time.
The transformation is already visible in Nairobi’s Central Business District and feeder roads across various wards, improving cleanliness, accessibility and pedestrian movement.
Drainage infrastructure is also being upgraded along 19 flood-prone roads, including the Mombasa Road-Bunyala Junction corridor and Globe Roundabout, to improve storm-water flow and reduce flooding.
Omollo noted that the improvements are expected to support Nairobi’s growing 24-hour economy by making it safer and easier for people to work, trade and move around the city at all hours.
A cleaner, safer and more efficient urban environment could also boost investor confidence, support businesses and create opportunities for jobs and enterprise.
He said the transformation must combine better infrastructure with enhanced security to ensure Nairobi remains a city where residents, visitors and businesses can thrive.
