As things stand, Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid is imminent, with only nine days to the elections.
Elkanah Odembo, who co-chairs Raila’s AUC campaign secretariat alongside Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei, has announced that 28 African presidents have assured Raila of their support.
To win the coveted seat, Kenya’s candidate needs to secure at least 33 votes from the 49 heads of state who will be participating in the vote.
With Odembo’s revelation, Raila needs the support of just five more African presidents to be declared the winner.
Countries that have publicly declared their support for Raila include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Seychelles.
Others include Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa, Angola, Togo, Nigeria, The Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Raila is facing stiff competition from Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti.
