Sixteen pupils have been burnt to death following a fire outbreak at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County.
The Thursday night fire burnt down a dormitory at the institution as the young learners were sleeping.
Confirming the incident, National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango said 14 other students sustained serious burns and were rushed to the hospital.
“We have 16 pupils dead and 14 injured. We are investigating the cause and take necessary action,” said Onyango.
It is reported that 15 of the deaths occurred at the scene, while one leaner succumbed to fire injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
At the time of filing this report, the Deputy Director DCI John Onyango, Senior Assitant IG and Director Homicide Unit and NPS Disaster Management Unit were on their way to the institution.
It is feared that more bodies could be found once the scene is cleared.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
