A Kilifi-based pastor has today been arraigned in court on a miscellaneous application for the offense of radicalization, contrary to Section 12(d) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act of 2012.
The pastor’s arrest followed a multi-agency operation, which uncovered his controversial activities at New Foundation Church, located in Chakama, where he was reportedly indoctrinating his followers.
Among the alarming teachings, congregants were advised not to seek medical attention when sick, but instead to climb a sacred tree within the church compound in hopes of receiving healing.
Additionally, it was discovered that the pastor had been administering “maji ya uzima,” a water believed to possess healing properties. The water was fetched from a well on the church premises and sold for Sh 200 per liter.
Investigations suggest that at least two congregants may have died due to following these practices, and another two hundred people are believed to be at risk if the church’s activities remain unchecked.
While law enforcement agencies continue to uphold the right to freedom of worship, members of the public are urged to be cautious of organizations that deviate from established doctrines, potentially endangering the lives of their followers and their families.
The investigative team has been granted ten days to complete their inquiries, with the next mention of the case scheduled for May 5, 2025.
