Kiambu MP Hon. Machua Waithaka has raised concerns over the recent outbreak of Marburg virus disease in Tanzania, urging the government to implement immediate measures to prevent its spread into Kenya.

Speaking in the National Assembly during the Fourth Session of the Thirteenth Parliament, Hon. Waithaka formally requested a statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Health under Standing Order 44(2)(c).

He emphasized the urgent need for preventive actions, given the deadly nature of the virus and Kenya’s vulnerability due to regional movement.

“Marburg virus disease is a rare but severe illness, with a case fatality rate of up to 88% according to the World Health Organization (WHO). With Tanzania confirming an outbreak on January 20, 2025, we must take proactive steps to safeguard public health,” said Hon. Waithaka.

He noted that Marburg virus, which shares similarities with Ebola, is transmitted through human contact and has no available vaccines or specific treatments, making early intervention critical. Citing Kenya’s past experience with COVID-19, he stressed the importance of preparedness to prevent a potential health crisis.

In his request, the legislator sought clarity on:

  1. The immediate measures the Ministry of Health is implementing to prevent the entry and spread of Marburg virus disease in Kenya.
  2. The government’s long-term strategies to enhance preparedness for disease outbreaks, including improved early detection systems and public health awareness initiatives.

Hon. Waithaka urged the government to act swiftly to mitigate the risk, ensuring Kenya is well-equipped to handle any potential cases. The request now awaits a response from the Departmental Committee on Health.
