The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has called for immediate and decisive action following the brutal assault of a woman by a gang of more than six men in Laare, Meru County.
The attack, which occurred on December 1 during a traditional circumcision procession, has sparked national outrage, highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety of women in public and cultural events.
Police from Laare Station launched a comprehensive search across Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama, leading to the arrest of six suspects linked to the incident. Authorities say the hunt for additional perpetrators is ongoing.
In a statement released on Saturday, December 6, KEWOPA condemned the attack, describing it as a “grave violation” of the woman’s dignity, security, and fundamental rights. The association expressed particular dismay that the assault took place during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a period dedicated to raising awareness and protecting survivors.
“This crime is a grave violation of her dignity, security, and fundamental rights,” KEWOPA’s statement read in part. “We call for swift, transparent, and uncompromised justice for the survivor and for the immediate identification and arrest of all remaining individuals involved.”
The association also urged authorities to safeguard the survivor’s privacy and ensure that neither the legal system nor the community retraumatizes her. KEWOPA emphasized the urgent need for communities to reject harmful cultural practices and protect women during public gatherings.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital after residents found her in critical condition and continues to receive medical and psychosocial support.
KEWOPA chair Leah Sankaire assured the public that the association will closely monitor the case as police continue their investigations.
