After a 15-year break, Safaricom, through its global brand Mpesa, has entered into a landmark two-year partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union.

The deal will see Sh90 million channelled into supporting both the Shujaa men’s team and the Kenya Lionesses as they prepare for the prestigious HSBC World Rugby Series and the HSBC Challenger Series, respectively.

This substantial investment aims to elevate the performance of both teams, ensuring optimal preparation and enhancing their pursuit of global success.

Sasha Mutai, Chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union, expressed his deep gratitude, acknowledging Safaricom’s critical role in the teams’ progress.

“We are deeply appreciative of Safaricom for their generous sponsorship after 15 years. This significant support will greatly improve our preparations and player management. Our goal is to secure a place among the top eight teams by the end of the HSBC World Rugby Series, thereby avoiding relegation, and this sponsorship will be pivotal in achieving that,” he said.

Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom, reinforced the company’s commitment to supporting sports at all levels.
