Kenya has sent 53 young athletes to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, as Africa hosts an Olympic sporting event for the first time.
The athletes will compete in 13 disciplines, including athletics, rugby sevens, basketball 3×3, swimming, boxing, cycling, fencing, judo, Baseball5, beach handball, beach wrestling, triathlon and wushu.
The Dakar 2026 Games officially opened on Saturday, October 31, and will run until November 13. About 2,700 young athletes from around the world are expected to compete across 25 sports in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
A major feature of Team Kenya’s contingent is the strong representation of female athletes.
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, 41 of the 53 athletes are female, accounting for 77 per cent of the Kenyan team.
The Ministry said the team reflects Kenya’s growing investment in sports beyond its traditional strength in athletics.
“Team Kenya’s participation in this landmark sporting event is a moment of immense national pride, providing an exceptional platform for our young athletes to showcase their talent and compete against the world’s best,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The Government said the Youth Olympic Games will also give the young athletes crucial exposure as Kenya prepares the next generation of competitors for the senior international stage.
The country’s participation is linked to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya’s Path to Podium strategy, which aims to develop athletes capable of competing at the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
Dakar 2026 is the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games and the first to be held in Africa. The Games were initially scheduled for 2022 but were postponed following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Olympics
The Ministry said Kenya would continue working with the National Olympic Committee and sports federations to strengthen talent development, athlete welfare and technical preparation.
As competition gets underway in Senegal, the young Kenyan athletes will be seeking to make their mark on a historic stage while carrying the country’s Olympic hopes into the future.
