To facilitate the creation of a future-ready workforce that can effectively operate in an ever-changing digital economy, Kenya made a public announcement about the launching of an AI Skills training program for students in universities in collaboration with Google.

During the launch of the project, the Minister of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, said that the initiative aims to give students one year free access to Google Gemini Pro Plan, an advanced AI learning platform that provides the latest AI tools such as DeepResearch and NotebookLM.

Kabogo urged learners to take up artificial intelligence courses as well as relevant digital skills that would go hand-in-hand with their careers, pointing out that AI skills are becoming a requirement in every sector.

“The new AI skills program seeks to harmonize education with the national development agenda towards making Kenya a digital-first country where AI will be used to increase productivity, attract capital, and quicken our transition to a knowledge-based economy,” Kabogo stated.

He was further said that the program is full of materials that are not only meant to provide great learning but also to facilitate students’ independence, unearthing and lead innovation.

He urged that the narrowing of the digital skill gap should be given a top priority and therefore educational institutions should not only IA literacy across all their courses but also ensure that Kenya is still a player in the international digital arena.

The tie-up with Google is a significant move in the right direction to prepare the youth of Kenya with the necessary skills to be successful in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and subsequently become the drivers of the digital transformation agenda in the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌country.
