The State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs today officially launched the Kenya Social Protection Policy 2023, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to improve the welfare of its citizens.
The launch was officiated by Principal Secretary Mr. Joseph M. Motari MBS.This forward-thinking policy framework envisions a Kenya where all citizens, regardless of their circumstances, can live with dignity and contribute to the nation’s economic and social progress.

The primary objective is to ensure that every Kenyan has access to essential social protection services, including income security, healthcare, and social safety nets.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Target 1.3, the Kenya Social Protection Policy (2023) aims to implement comprehensive systems supporting vulnerable populations throughout their lives.
The policy seeks to extend coverage to the poor and vulnerable, ensuring the protection of social, economic, and cultural rights as guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution.
By focusing on the needs of its most vulnerable citizens, the Government of Kenya, through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, is working in collaboration with non-state actors to increase investments in social protection.
The goal is to achieve sustainable poverty reduction, inclusive growth, and a brighter future for all.
The launch event was attended by key representatives from international organizations, including UNICEF (Mr. Mahboob A. Bajwa, Deputy Country Representative), WFP (Mr. BaiManKay Sankoh, Deputy Country Representative), USAID (Dr. Hammed Omar), FAO (Hamisi Williams), as well as various government officials.
