The Government has initiated plans to expand and implement the Ajira Digital Programme under its second phase, to enable more young Kenyans to access digital skills and jobs. ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo met with a Mastercard Foundation delegation led by Country Director Hannah Tsadik.
The meeting was part of the briefing on the Ajira Digital Programme Phase II (2026 2030).
The first session described some of the advances achieved during the first phase of the programme, where partnerships have supported several thousands of young people’s developments of digital skills in past five years.
The second phase will strengthen the governance structure of programme, establish continuous monitoring and evaluation, and increasethe number of digital hubs nationwide.
The programme will also focus on increased inclusion of persons with disabilities, young women and other marginalized groups to make Kenya’s digital economy more inclusive.
“We explored the implementation roadmap for Phase II, which will focus on strengthening governance, continuous monitoring and evaluation, scaling digital hubs across the country, and increasing the participation of persons with disabilities, young women, and other underserved groups.” said Kabogo
Kabogo also stated that the government and Mastercard Foundation will continue to work together in preparing a digitally skilled workforce and opening up opportunities from a rapidly growing digital economy in the country.
This level of cooperation is to facilitate more young people to improve their digital skills and gain access to the opportunities in the digital and online labour market.
Also present at the briefing was the Secretary for ICT and e-Government, Mrs Kirema.
The Phase II programmewhich will run from 2026-2030 is themed “scaling the impact of digital skills and opportunities to more Kenyans”. It will draw on the lessons and the network of the first phase to bring digital skills and opportunities to more Kenyans.
