President William Ruto has unveiled the second batch of nominations to his cabinet, which notably includes several members aligned with Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

This move follows Ruto’s earlier cabinet dissolution, which saw the removal of all Cabinet Secretaries except Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

The new nominations come as part of Ruto’s broader strategy to establish a government of national unity. Prior to the latest appointments, Ruto emphasized his commitment to extensive consultations aimed at forming a diverse and effective administration.

“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the implementation of crucial programmes. These include addressing the debt burden, raising domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, and eliminating waste and duplication among government agencies,” Ruto said when announcing the cabinet dissolution.

Ruto also highlighted his intention to tackle corruption and streamline government operations. “This new team will be crucial in combating corruption and ensuring a lean, efficient, and cost-effective government,” he added.

The latest cabinet appointments include:

  • Mining, Blue Economy: Hassan Joho
  • Cooperatives: Wycliffe Oparanya
  • National Treasury: John Mbadi
  • Energy and Petroleum: Opiyo Wandayi

On July 11, Ruto had dissolved his entire cabinet, including the Attorney General, and tasked Principal Secretaries with managing the ministries until the new cabinet was established. He also appointed Mudavadi as acting Cabinet Secretary for all ministries during this transition period.
