President William Ruto has nominated Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi as the new Cabinet Secretary for Energy. This nomination comes as part of a broader reshuffle aimed at strengthening the administration and ensuring effective delivery of government services.

Opiyo Wandayi, who currently serves as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, is poised to take over from Davis Chirchir, who has been nominated for the Ministry of Roads, succeeding Kipchumba Murkomen. Wandayi’s nomination is now subject to parliamentary vetting and approval.

Born on June 22, 1972, Wandayi’s educational journey began at Sikalame Primary School, where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1986.

He later attended Sawagongo Secondary School, earning his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) four years later. Wandayi pursued a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Nairobi, laying a foundation for his diverse career.

In addition to his agricultural background, Wandayi furthered his education in business and management. He completed a Diploma in Business Management from the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) in 2008 and pursued an MBA Executive program at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in 2010. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at Daystar University.

Wandayi’s appointment as the Energy CS is significant, given his leadership experience and background in various fields. As Energy CS, he will be responsible for overseeing one of the critical sectors in Kenya, focusing on sustainable energy development and policy implementation. His appointment is part of President Ruto’s broader strategy to create a government that includes diverse political and professional backgrounds, aiming to enhance governance and service delivery.

The parliamentary vetting process will determine whether Wandayi assumes the role, where he will face the challenge of ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply in Kenya, a key driver of economic growth and development.
