President William Ruto has nominated former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho as the new Cabinet Secretary for Mining, replacing Aisha Jumwa as reprersentatives of the coastal region.

Hassan Joho, who served as the Governor of Mombasa County for two terms from 2013 to 2022, is set to bring his extensive experience in governance and public administration to the Ministry of Mining.

Known for his leadership in transforming Mombasa, Joho has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, particularly within the coastal region.

The nomination of Joho, a key political figure allied with opposition leader Raila Odinga, signals President Ruto’s intention to build a broad-based government that includes diverse political voices.

This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to foster unity and inclusivity in the country’s leadership.

Aisha Jumwa, the outgoing CS for Gender and Culture, has been relieved of her duties as part of this reshuffle.

The two were former staunch member of ODM in the coastal region before they fell out .Jumwa joined UDA partywhile Joho extensively campaigned for Raila Odinga.

Joho’s nomination is now subject to parliamentary vetting, a standard procedure that will determine his official appointment.

If approved, he will oversee Kenya’s mining sector, which is pivotal to the country’s economic growth and development.
