Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving in Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have commenced renovation works at the Dhobley Airstrip.
The project, spearheaded by the Kenya Army Corps of Engineers, is part of ongoing Civil–Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, improving operational efficiency, and fostering economic growth in the region.
The refurbishment focuses on upgrading key infrastructure essential for safe aircraft operations.
A major component of the project is the improvement of the Runway End Safety Area (RESA), a critical safety feature designed to minimize the risk of aircraft overruns during challenging take-offs and landings.
The exercise is being supervised by AUSSOM–KDF engineering officers in close coordination with the Dhobley Airstrip management.
Once completed, the upgrades will reinforce the airstrip’s role as a crucial logistics hub—supporting the continuous movement of military supplies and personnel vital to the AUSSOM mandate—while also enhancing reliability for civilian and humanitarian air services.
