Following a successful outing at the Africa Wrestling Championships in Morocco, the Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association (KAWA) is now setting its sights on the upcoming East Africa Wrestling Championships, officially known as the East Africa Regional Development Tournament (EAREDT).
The second edition of this tournament is scheduled to take place from August 6–11 in Nairobi.
Speaking during the national team’s training session, junior head coach Mark Onguyesi Omumasaba acknowledged the intensity of Kenya’s 2025 wrestling calendar but expressed confidence in his team. He also emphasized his commitment to nurturing new talent, promising to give more opportunities to upcoming wrestlers during the regional championship.
Coach Omumasaba, who was assisted by Winrose Alivitsa during the Africa Championships in Morocco, led Kenya’s Cadet (U-17) team to an impressive performance, bagging six medals—two silver and four bronze. The results saw the women’s cadets finish third overall, while the men’s team secured eighth place with 40 points.
In the U-20 category, the women’s team placed fifth out of nine with 65 points, while the men finished seventh out of 11 in freestyle, and seventh out of nine in Greco-Roman with 31 points.
KAWA had fielded a robust squad of 18 wrestlers, including both junior and senior athletes. In the senior freestyle category, Kenya ranked 12th out of 20 with 40 points; in Greco-Roman, they placed fifth out of 12 with 60 points, and in women’s wrestling, they secured 11th out of 19 with 16 points.
Looking ahead, after the East Africa Championships in August, the national team will have little time to rest as they prepare for yet another continental assignment—the Africa Beach Wrestling Championships 2025 in Casablanca, scheduled for September 4–5.
This event will feature wrestlers across multiple age groups, including U-15, U-17, U-20, and senior categories.
