Kitui Woman Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu has come out strongly against President William Ruto’s decision to sign the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill into law, describing it as “a dark day for democracy.”
Speaking during a public event in Kitui on Tuesday, Dr. Kasalu said the new law undermines the freedoms that Kenyans fought hard for under the 2010 Constitution, accusing the President of reversing the democratic gains the country has made over the years.
“President Ruto is taking away freedoms he never fought for,” she said. “He never supported the 2010 Constitution, and it’s no wonder he now disregards the rights and liberties enshrined in it.”
The outspoken legislator further criticized Members of Parliament who supported the bill, saying it was sneakily signed into law on October 15 — at a time when the country was still in mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whom she hailed as “the father of freedom.”
Dr. Kasalu urged her colleagues in Parliament to stand up for the truth and protect Kenyans’ right to free expression.
“We cannot allow the clock of freedom to be turned back,” she warned. “This bill criminalizes dissent and silences the voices that hold power accountable.”
