Kabras Sugar RFC’s Jone Kubu has expressed his excitement and gratitude after receiving the call-up to represent Kenya in Rugby 7s.

The Fijian-born player, who never imagined playing for Kenya on the world stage, is thrilled to join the Shujaa squad for the upcoming World Rugby Series.

“I never thought this day would come, representing Kenya on such a big platform. I always just wanted to play rugby and contribute in some way, but now I’m here, and I feel incredibly blessed,” Kubu shared.

Kubu was selected by head coach Kelvin ‘Bling’ Wambua for the fourth leg of the series, which will take place in Vancouver on February 21-22.

Having previously played for Kenya Simbas in the national 15s team, Kubu is eager to take on the 7s challenge and help the team improve after their 10th place finish in Perth.

“Moving from 15s to 7s is no easy task, especially when it comes to fitness,” Kubu explained. “But we’ve been working hard, and I’m ready to give my best for Kenya.”

As he prepares for his debut, Kubu is also looking forward to a potential clash with his native Fiji, should the two teams face off during the series.

“It would be a special moment if we play against Fiji,” he said. “Representing both my birthplace and my adopted country would make it one of the most memorable experiences of my life.”

Kenya is in Pool A for the fourth leg, alongside Argentina, France, and Great Britain.
