Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has called for a national dialogue to tackle the escalating cases of abductions in the country.

During a press conference in Nairobi today afternoon, Muturi expressed his growing concern about the rising frequency of abductions and the lack of accountability from security agencies.

“It is deeply troubling that Kenyans are being abducted, yet there seems to be no action from the police, who continue to deny any involvement,” Muturi stated.

Human rights organizations have reported over 40 abductions since June 2024, which were linked to a youth uprising against President William Ruto’s tax policies, later withdrawn in response to public pressure.

Last month seven youths were abducted, allegedly for their involvement in creating satirical cartoons that depicted President Ruto and other leaders negatively.

They were eventually released following widespread public outcry.

“We urgently need a national conversation on this issue as it is spiralling out of control,” Muturi said. “There should be an open forum where those who have been abducted can speak freely about their experiences.”

“Since the security agencies claim they are not involved, we expect to see action taken against those responsible for the abductions. But that has not happened, which is why I am calling for a national dialogue,” Muturi emphasized.

President Ruto has also expressed his concern over the abductions, warning that failure to address the issue could lead to widespread disorder.

“The president himself has called for an end to these abductions, recognizing that they could lead to total anarchy. We need an honest discussion to identify the root cause and find solutions,” Muturi said. “Everyone should feel safe to share their views.”

Reflecting on his own experience, Muturi shared that his son  Leslie Muturi was abducted six months ago but was later released without charges.

“As a member of the Cabinet, this happened to my own child. We all deserve to know who is behind the abductions of our young people,” Muturi said.

He further urged the government to honour its commitments to end extrajudicial killings and abductions, emphasizing that such actions erode public trust.

“Extrajudicial killings and abductions must come to an end because that was our promise as a government,” Muturi said.
