President William Ruto has pledged to resolve the financial and management challenges currently facing Moi University.

The President revealed that a committee has been formed to assess the extent of the institution’s problems and propose solutions.

“We will establish an efficient management team and provide adequate resources to ensure Moi University thrives, just like other public universities,” Ruto stated.

He made the announcement at Ngeria Technical Training Institute in Kapseret Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, during the institute’s opening on Friday. He also inaugurated a cutting-edge ICT lab at the facility.

Ruto was joined by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, as well as Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu) and Stephen Sang (Nandi).

Moi University is grappling with substantial financial challenges, including debts exceeding Sh8 billion. This includes Sh4 billion in unpaid payroll deductions and Sh3 billion owed to Rivatex East Africa Limited.

Additionally, the university has accumulated Sh8.6 billion in unpaid salaries to lecturers, a debt that has been building since 2016. The closure of new campuses has further strained the university’s payroll.

In light of these issues, the Parliamentary Public Investments Committee on Education has recommended a forensic audit of the university. The committee has also called for a halt to all ongoing projects and the suspension of new staff hires until the audit is completed.
