Immediate former Chief Justice David Maraga has defended his recent visit to Tanzania, dismissing claims that he and fellow leaders intended to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.
Speaking in Kombani, Kwale County, during the official opening of the United Green Movement (UGM) Party office, Maraga said the visit was purely in solidarity with Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu and not meant to spark political unrest.
“The reason I went to Tanzania was not to cause chaos there. It was in solidarity with Tanzania’s opposition leader Tundu Lissu. We have no interest to fight the government of Tanzania or any other government,” Maraga stated.
His remarks come in the wake of the brief detention of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi in Tanzania, a move that sparked diplomatic concerns and raised questions about the intentions of the visiting delegation.
Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice until 2021, used the occasion to reaffirm his political ambitions, announcing his intent to vie for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
“I will work with like-minded politicians and parties in this journey,” he said, signalling a growing political presence beyond the judiciary.
The UGM party launch in Kwale marked a new chapter for the former CJ, as he builds momentum for his presidential bid while championing democratic values and regional solidarity.
