The Judiciary is mourning the death of retired High Court Judge Justice Omondi Tunya, who passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Nairobi Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed his death, describing him as a dedicated judicial officer who served the country with distinction, extending her sympathies to his family, friends, and former colleagues.
“It is with great sorrow that I have learned of the passing of (Rtd) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya. On my own behalf and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him,” Koome said in the statement.
Tunya’s career spanned for several decades, presiding over Kenya’s most significant criminal and civil cases. He served as a District Magistrate in 1974, to Nairobi Chief Magistrate in 1990, before later being appointed a judge. He served with diligence, distinction and an unwavering commitment to the fair and timely administration of justice.
In 2013, Hon. Justice Tunya made headlines after he was attacked by armed robbers along Mamlaka Road in Nairobi losing his legally issued firearm containing six bullets.
