Kenya is accelerating efforts to transition into a green digital economy as part of its broader strategy to improve energy efficiency and unlock investment opportunities across sectors.

ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo made the announcement following a strategic meeting with a delegation from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), led by Angela Wamola, the Head of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Kabogo said the government is keen on leveraging technology and digital innovation to not only spur economic growth but also meet the country’s sustainability goals.

“Transitioning to a Green Digital Future will drive Kenya’s energy efficiency and stimulate demand across sectors,” said CS Kabogo.

The discussions focused on key enablers of the digital transformation, including device affordability, the need for progressive policy and regulatory frameworks, continued infrastructure development, and collaboration with industry players to foster a conducive environment for innovation and investment.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the critical role of energy access in supporting digital expansion, particularly in underserved regions, and identified areas where partnerships could be formed to bridge the digital divide.

Also present at the meeting were Caroline Mbugua, GSMA’s Senior Director of Public Policy and Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Linus Melly, the association’s Senior Policy Manager, alongside senior technical officers from the ICT Ministry.

The GSMA team reaffirmed its commitment to working with Kenya to promote digital inclusion and drive sustainable economic growth through technology.
