A fire broke out on the grassland near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) along Airport North Road on Friday, February 21, 2025.
Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident and reported that emergency teams are actively working to extinguish the flames and prevent further spread.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Emergency response teams are on-site battling a grassland fire inside JKIA, along Airport North Road, Nairobi County. Efforts are underway to contain the blaze and prevent its spread,” stated the Kenya Red Cross.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) assured the public that the fire is confined to non-operational grassland areas and has not affected any critical infrastructure or airport operations.
In a statement, KAA confirmed it is actively managing the situation and emphasized that the fire has not impacted the operational zones of the airport.
“A coordinated response team, including KAA Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting Service, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), and the Nairobi County Fire Unit, is diligently working to control the blaze,” the statement said.
“All airport activities, including flight schedules, passenger processing, and cargo handling, remain fully operational and unaffected,” KAA added. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
