Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale on Thursday joined First Lady H.E. Mama Racheal Ruto at State House, Nairobi for the 2024 inaugural First Lady’s Mazingira Awards (FLAMA).
FLAMA recognizes the critical role played by children from the over 1,000 schools across Kenya in climate change mitigation, adaptation and Resilience building.
In his speech, Hon. Duale applauded FLAMA as an exceptional platform for children to showcase their creativity and solutions to the environmental challenges facing their households, communities and country.
He noted that at the heart of FLAMA is the undeniable role children play in shaping the future of environmental and climate resilience, given that they bear the biggest brunt of climate change effects hence the nereed for decisive actions to secure their wellbeing.
At the glitzy ceremony where learners were feted for excellence in different categories, Hon. Duale commended the First Lady for founding FLAMA saying the initiative augments Government’s efforts to mainstream environmental education in the school curriculum.
He said FLAMA would help accelerate the attainment of Kenya’s ambitious climate agenda that includes the country’s tree cover to the 30% by the year 2032 through 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme, anchored in the 10-year Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy.
Earlier, the Cabinet Secretary launched the clean up of the Arboretum segment of Nairobi River through the Government’s flagship Climate Worx Mtaani initiative unveiled by H.E President Dr. William Ruto recently.
Several senior Government officials attended the award event among them Nairobi County Deputy Governor James Muchiri, Principal Secretaries Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Belio Kipsang (Basic Education) and Aurelia Rono (Parliamentary Affairs) among others.
