During the ongoing impeachment trial of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a contentious exchange unfolded in the Senate as allegations surfaced regarding Gachagua’s substantial property portfolio, estimated at Ksh 5.2 billion.
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, the mover of the impeachment motion, asserted that the Deputy President has amassed an extensive range of properties, a claim he justified during his testimony.
“It is our allegation, and we have justified it in our evidence in chief,” Mutuse stated firmly.
However, Elisha Ongoya, representing Gachagua, challenged the basis of the allegations, pressing Mutuse for clarification on how this valuation was determined.
“Who gave you this value of Ksh 5 billion?” Ongoya questioned, emphasizing the need for substantiation of such significant claims.
In response, Mutuse explained, “It’s a matter of additions,” indicating that the valuation was derived from a compilation of various properties attributed to Gachagua.
The impeachment motion against Gachagua includes multiple charges of misconduct and financial irregularities, with the alleged property holdings being a focal point of the discussions.
As the trial progresses, the Senate is expected to scrutinize the evidence presented regarding the Deputy President’s wealth and the legality of his financial dealings.
Gachagua’s legal team has repeatedly dismissed the allegations as unfounded, arguing that they are politically motivated attempts to undermine his position.
The senate is expected to vote on Thursday evening .
