In the ongoing impeachment hearings for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a crucial exchange unfolded between legal representatives regarding the Deputy President’s standing within the government hierarchy.

During the session, Elisha Ongoya, representing Gachagua, pressed Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse about any perceived discord between the Deputy President and President William Ruto.

“Has the President complained to you that he is being undermined by his Deputy?” Ongoya inquired.

In a clear response, Mutuse replied, “No,” indicating that there have been no formal complaints from the President concerning Gachagua’s conduct or authority.

Ongoya further probed the structure of government, asking, “Does the DP have another supervisor in the structure of government, other than the President?”

Mutuse’s response emphasized the broader democratic framework, stating, “The people of Kenya and Parliament,” suggesting that the Deputy President is ultimately accountable to the public and legislative body rather than having a direct supervisory figure apart from the President.
