The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has kicked off the continuous voter registration exercise, marking a key step in preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The drive officially launched on Monday, September 29, in Kajiado County, and will roll out across all 290 constituencies. Voter registration had been suspended in June 2022 ahead of the last general election.
The Commission is targeting 6.3 million new voters, focusing on young people who have recently turned 18, those who have never registered before, and citizens wishing to transfer their polling stations.
Appearing on Citizen TV’s DayBreak, IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana explained that eligible voters must present either a national ID card or a valid Kenyan passport. Registration will be available at IEBC constituency offices and Huduma Centres nationwide.
“This is the official launch of the continuous voter registration. From today, our offices in all constituencies across the country are open,” Mukhwana said.
He added that while the exercise had been announced in August, it was delayed due to logistical challenges. The Commission has now resumed in line with constitutional requirements.
Mukhwana also assured Kenyans that the process complies with data protection laws, highlighting improvements in the Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) kits.
“Unlike before, the KIEMS kits now scan and capture a voter’s biometric and biodata with greater accuracy. The information goes directly to IEBC databases, is cleaned regularly, and ensures that ineligible entries, such as those of deceased persons, cannot be used,” he noted.
