Victor Wanyama, former captain of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, will be departing CF Montreal following a four-year tenure at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
The club confirmed in a statement that Wanyama’s departure comes as his contract expires at the end of the year.
Wanyama made 117 appearances for Montreal and scored five goals after joining the club on March 30, 2020, from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
His debut came in a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Honduran club C.D. Olimpia, where Montreal lost 2-1, with Wanyama providing an assist to Saphir Taider.
The former AFC Leopards player captained Montreal to the 2021 Canadian Championship title, leading them to a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC in the final.
Initially opting not to renew his contract in October 2022, Wanyama reversed his decision and signed a two-year extension in January of the following year.
He retired from international football in 2022 after 14 years with Harambee Stars, including nine years as captain.
Besides Wanyama, goalkeeper Logan Ketterer, whose contract also expires, and Uruguayan defender Joaquin Sosa, who has been on loan, will also be leaving the club.
