Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has raised the alarm over a possible security threat in his constituency, urging the National Police Service not to lower its guard amid rising political tensions.
Addresing the Inspector General Douglas Kanja in a letter, Ichung’wah claimed there were plans to mobilise groups to cause chaos in Kikuyu town, warning that the situation could quickly get out of hand if not contained.
“We have verified information that Gachagua has directed DCP aspirants across Kiambu, Nairobi, Muranga, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua Counties to mobilise and transport goons to Kikuyu Town,” he said.
The MP asked the police leadership to maintain security presence in the area, saying residents, businesses and property could be at risk.
Ichung’wah further claimed that some businesses linked to his family could be targeted, urging police to act on what he described as credible intelligence.
At the centre of the standoff is a widening political fallout involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom Ichung’wah accuses of fuelling tensions through inflammatory remarks.
The MP also warned against any move to scale down police deployment ahead of planned political activities in the area, arguing that such a decision could leave residents exposed.
“Security should not be compromised at any cost,” he said in the letter, insisting that Kikuyu has historically hosted leaders from across the political divide without incident.
His concerns come against the backdrop of heightened political activity in the Mt Kenya region, where rival camps have in recent months traded sharp accusations, raising temperatures on the ground.
Ichung’wah referenced past incidents of unrest in Kikuyu, including attacks on public offices and private property, saying the area cannot afford a repeat of such scenes.
The letter now puts the spotlight on the police command, with expectations that security agencies will move swiftly to assess the claims and ensure calm is maintained.
So far, the police have not publicly responded to the allegations.
As tensions simmer, residents and traders in Kikuyu will be watching closely, hoping the situation does not escalate into violence.
