Kenyans have been urged to brace for moderate to heavy rains in several parts of the country over the next five days, with the Kenya Meteorological Service forecasting rainfall from Sunday, September 13 to Thursday, September 17, 2026.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Service, the rains will mainly affect the Coast, Western Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley and Central Kenya, including Nairobi.
The forecast, issued on Friday, September 11, indicates that rainfall will mainly occur in the afternoon, although some areas are expected to experience morning showers.
Along the Coast, Mombasa is expected to receive light morning showers throughout the five-day period, with sunny afternoon conditions expected except on Tuesday.
Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi and Taita Taveta are also expected to experience periods of rainfall, with light showers forecast on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
In Northern Kenya, Garissa, Mandera and Marsabit are expected to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Wajir is forecast to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday and Tuesday.
Several counties in Central Kenya are also expected to receive rainfall during the forecast period.
Kiambu, Nairobi, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri and Murang’a are expected to experience rainfall from Sunday through Wednesday.
Nyandarua is forecast to receive afternoon showers on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, while Kirinyaga is expected to receive light rains on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday.
In the Rift Valley, West Pokot is expected to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet are forecast to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with moderate showers expected on Monday.
Western Kenya and counties around the Lake Victoria Basin will also experience rainfall.
Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori are expected to receive afternoon rains on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Cold nights expected in several counties
The weather service has also warned of chilly nights in several parts of the country, with Nyandarua expected to record some of the lowest temperatures during the forecast period.
Night temperatures in Nyandarua could fall to 6°C on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Samburu is also expected to experience particularly cold nights, with temperatures dropping to 6°C on Sunday before rising to 10°C on Monday and Tuesday and 11°C on Wednesday and Thursday.
Machakos is expected to record minimum temperatures ranging between 10°C and 13°C, while Embu could record a low of 10°C on Monday.
In Kitui, minimum temperatures are forecast to range between 12°C and 15°C.
Meru is expected to record night temperatures falling from about 15°C to as low as 11°C on Thursday, while Murang’a will record minimum temperatures ranging between 11°C and 13°C.
Kiambu is forecast to experience minimum temperatures of between 11°C and 13°C.
