Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) tournament in Tanzania.
The national team arrived in Tanzania on Saturday morning for the Four-Nation Tournament, which was meant to be part of their preparations for the upcoming CHAN tournament set to kick off on August 2nd.
However, the team was met with unexpected challenges, as both the hotel they were booked into and the training ground provided were deemed substandard.
Head coach Benni McCarthy raised concerns and threatened to withdraw the team if the conditions were not improved. Ultimately, a decision was made to pull Kenya out of the competition altogether.
“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) wishes to inform the public that the Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania,” FKF said in a statement this afternoon.
Adding; “This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” the statement added.
The team is expected to return to Nairobi on Tuesday to continue preparations for the CHAN.
